Background of the Study

Safe childbirth practices are essential in reducing maternal and neonatal mortality, which remain significant public health concerns in Nigeria. The World Health Organization (WHO, 2024) and Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Health have established national guidelines for safe childbirth, emphasizing skilled birth attendance, timely interventions, infection prevention, and the use of evidence-based practices to enhance maternal and neonatal health outcomes (Bello & Yusuf, 2024).

At Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH), nurses play a critical role in ensuring adherence to these guidelines. However, challenges such as inadequate staffing, insufficient training, and limited resources may affect compliance with national standards, potentially compromising the quality of care provided to mothers and newborns (Adebayo & Hassan, 2023).

This study seeks to evaluate the extent to which nurses at BSUTH adhere to national guidelines for safe childbirth practices, identify factors affecting compliance, and recommend measures to improve adherence.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the availability of national guidelines for safe childbirth, maternal and neonatal mortality rates in Nigeria remain high, suggesting gaps in adherence among healthcare providers, including nurses (Okafor & Adeyemi, 2024). BSUTH, as a tertiary healthcare facility, is expected to uphold best practices in maternal care. However, reports indicate that nurses may not fully comply with these guidelines due to various constraints, potentially leading to preventable complications during childbirth.

A lack of empirical data on nurses' adherence to safe childbirth guidelines at BSUTH creates a gap in knowledge, making it difficult to implement targeted interventions. This study aims to address this gap by evaluating nurses' compliance with national guidelines and identifying strategies to improve adherence.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of nurses’ adherence to national guidelines for safe childbirth practices at BSUTH.
  2. To identify factors influencing nurses’ compliance with safe childbirth guidelines at BSUTH.
  3. To propose strategies for improving nurses' adherence to national childbirth guidelines.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of nurses’ adherence to national guidelines for safe childbirth practices at BSUTH?
  2. What factors influence nurses’ compliance with safe childbirth guidelines at BSUTH?
  3. What strategies can be implemented to improve nurses' adherence to national childbirth guidelines?

Research Hypotheses

H₀: Nurses at BSUTH do not adhere to national guidelines for safe childbirth practices.
H₁: Nurses at BSUTH adhere to national guidelines for safe childbirth practices.

H₀: There are no significant factors influencing nurses’ compliance with safe childbirth guidelines.
H₁: Significant factors influence nurses’ compliance with safe childbirth guidelines.

H₀: There are no effective strategies for improving nurses’ adherence to national childbirth guidelines.
H₁: Effective strategies can improve nurses’ adherence to national childbirth guidelines.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on nurses working in the maternity and labor wards at BSUTH and their adherence to national guidelines for safe childbirth. Limitations may include variations in individual practices, potential reluctance among participants to disclose non-compliance, and institutional constraints affecting guideline implementation.
